What is the best and cheapest professional camera?

Im willing to pay upto £250
Sony A200 with 18-70mm lens. £245. I have one and it is fab.
Avoid the Nikon D40 that others suggest here, they don't tell you that you will be stuck with manual focus on second-hand Nikon lenses. The D40/D40X and D60 do not have an auto-focus motor built into the camera body.
They also don't tell you that the D40 doesn't have sensor cleaning, it doesn't do bracketing, doesn't have image stabilisation in the body, has a poorer auto-focus system and is lower mpix.
Get the Sony A200 and expand you lens collection by buying Minolta, Sigma and Tamron lenses off eBay, anything with the Sony "A" or Minolta "MA" lens mount that has been produced in the last 20 years. They are excellent and cheap lenses, I have several!
Because the Sony A200 has an auto-focus motor these old cheap lenses work with it, they also work with the Sony's Super Steady Shot image stabilisation built into the body (unlike the D40 which does not).

There is no reason to get the Nikon D40 over the Sony A200, it is clearly inferior in terms of features.
