I am looking to go to DC and am interested in staying in a place in Greenbelt MD. Is this a safe area?
Is this area a safe spot for tourists, and in general? What would it be described as?
I am very familiar w Greenbelt. I don't live there but go to the area often, my Mom, a sister & her husband lived there until recently as well as an aunt. Someone else described biking, parks and it being safe. They are not incorrect however it sounds like they are referring to the original community of Greenbelt, often referred to now as Old Greenbelt. There are no hotels in that area. Greenbelt is a large suburb now w shopping centers (mostly large strip malls) and little else. It is just a few miles from College Park, MD, home to Maryland University. Besides residential streets the roads are 4 & 6 lane divided highways leading to major highways (Wash Beltway Rte 495 & I 95 and the Baltimore/Washington Parkway). You would need a car to get around easily.
Most hotels will shuttle you to the Greenbelt Metro Station (subway). There is one shopping center w a multiplex theater and in Old Greenbelt there is a single theater. Old Greenbelt is actually on some registry of historic places. Greenbelt, MD is in Prince George's County, a higher crime area. I don't think of Greenbelt as a walk-around place for visitors. There really isn't much there for tourists except perhaps NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. My family really enjoys Greenbelt---Old Greenbelt (a niece has been looking at homes in the old part). That's not the same as Greenbelt where the hotels are. Whole different can of worms.
