You're out there a little bit. Sure, extremist religion leads to a lot of horrors, and blind trust (which religion does encourage) can lead to abuses like you describe, but it doesn't follow from that that atheism is a more honorable lifestyle than Christianity.
It's the kind of life you lead, not what deity (if any) you worship, that makes you a good person.
